A laptop on a bright desk beside two open notebooks

Dictation · Mac and Windows · Free and Pro

Press a key, speak, and it types anywhere.

Hold fn on a Mac or Right Ctrl on Windows, say what you mean, and let go. The words appear wherever your cursor is, in any app, transcribed and tidied on your own computer. Free for 1,000 words a week, no account needed.

How it works

Four steps, and the first one is clicking.

  1. 1

Click where the words should go

An email, a Slack message, a Word document, a prompt box, a code comment. Wherever your cursor is, that is where the text will land.

  2. 2

    Hold fn and speak

On a Mac, hold fn (the Globe key). On Windows, hold Right Ctrl. Or choose your own shortcut. Double-tap it to keep the microphone open for a long dictation, and tap again to stop.

  3. 3

    Let go

Your speech is transcribed on your computer, not on a server. The audio is not uploaded. With the model downloaded once, it works with Wi-Fi off.

  4. 4

    The words appear

In Pro, SmartText tidies them first: punctuation in, the ums out, a list you spoke written as a list. Then VV types them into the app, as if you had typed them yourself.

Anywhere

No plugins. It types where your cursor is.

VV does not integrate with anything, on purpose. It types through the same input layer your keyboard uses, so the app on the other end cannot tell the difference, and nothing breaks when that app updates.

The overlay shows it is listening. Let go and the text lands.

Finished text, not a transcript

It writes it the way you would have typed it.

Built not to lose a word

A muted mic tells you. A failed tidy-up gives you your words.

  • Silent-microphone warning. If your mic sends only silence, VV says so within a few seconds, so a mute key does not cost you a paragraph.
  • SmartText never blocks a dictation. A missing model, a slow moment, anything unexpected: you get the transcript instead.
  • Cloud Polish falls back too. If our server is slow or unreachable, your own words are pasted.
  • Replay. The local history keeps the audio, so you can hear what you said.

What leaves your computer

  • Your voice: never. Speech is transcribed on your Mac or PC. How on-device recognition works.
  • SmartText, vocabulary and snippets (Pro): run on your computer. Free is plain transcription with none of them.
  • Transforms: local by default (Apple Intelligence on a Mac, or a local Ollama model). Only if you add a cloud provider does the text go to it, and the app labels it.
  • Cloud Polish (Pro): the finished text goes to our server, which uses OpenAI with storage turned off. Zero data retention is not in place.
  • Permissions: the microphone, and on a Mac, Accessibility, which is the permission that lets an app type for you.

Dictation is good at prose: email, messages, notes, prompts and first drafts. It is not the right tool for code syntax, spreadsheets or anything with a strict character limit, and it works best alongside your keyboard, not instead of it.

Same app · Vaitly Meetings

And when you are on a call, it takes the notes.

The same VV records your Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, WhatsApp and Slack calls in the background, with no bot, and writes minutes, decisions and action items afterwards. Part of Pro, in beta.

Questions

About dictation.

Which apps does dictation work in?

Any app where you can type. VV types through the same input layer as your keyboard, so there is no plugin to install and no list of supported apps to check. Password fields are the deliberate exception, and on Windows it cannot type into a program running as administrator.

Is my voice uploaded?

No. Speech is transcribed by a model on your Mac or PC. The audio is not uploaded. On Free, the text stays on your computer too, unless you point a Transform at a cloud provider. In Pro, Cloud Polish sends the finished text, never the audio, to our server.

What is SmartText?

Part of Pro: a small writing model that runs on your computer after every dictation. It adds punctuation, removes fillers and false starts, and writes a spoken list as a list. It downloads once after setup; until it arrives, dictation works as before. If anything goes wrong, you get your words exactly as you said them.

Does it work offline?

Yes. The first run downloads the speech model, which needs a connection once. After that, dictation and SmartText work with no internet. Cloud Polish and buying a plan need the network.

Which shortcut do I use?

On a fresh Mac, fn (the Globe key). On Windows, Right Ctrl is suggested. You can choose any shortcut in Settings. Hold it to talk, or double-tap to keep the microphone open.

What if my microphone is muted?

VV tells you within a few seconds if your microphone is sending only silence — a mute key, or an input level turned right down — so you find out before you have said a paragraph, not after.

How much is free?

1,000 words of dictation a week, resetting Monday 00:00 UTC, on one computer, with no account. Pro makes dictation unlimited and adds Vaitly Meetings and Cloud Polish for £9.99 a month or £99 a year.
