VV vs Typeless: not stored is not the same as not sent
Typeless makes a strong retention promise and runs on four platforms. VV makes a structural one and runs on a Mac. Which matters depends on whether you need a policy or an architecture.

The claim, read carefully
Typeless states that your audio is processed securely in real time and never stored in the cloud
, and that dictation data is never used for model training by us or any third party
. It also lists ISO 27001 certification and GDPR and HIPAA compliance. Those are serious commitments and more than most vendors publish.
Read the first one again, though, because the wording is precise and it matters. Processed in real time and never stored describe what happens to audio after it arrives somewhere. Neither sentence says the audio stayed on your machine.
This is not an accusation. Zero-retention processing is a legitimate and well-engineered design, and for a great many buyers it is entirely sufficient. It is simply a different guarantee from on-device recognition, and the distinction is worth understanding before you sign anything. See what on-device actually means.

The cleanup question
Typeless advertises automatic removal of filler words and repeated words, and detection of mid-sentence self-corrections. That is a genuinely useful feature set and it is the core of their pitch.
VV does the same class of work, with one deliberate difference: it is a switch, and by default the rewriting runs locally. VV Pro, adds AI editing on our server — that sends the finished text, never the audio, and only if you choose Pro. Some people want their speech polished aggressively. Others find it unsettling to read something they did not say — particularly in an email that goes out under their name. We think that is a preference rather than a feature, so it is a setting.
What you said
so um I think we should we should push the launch to to Monday because er legal haven't signed off yet
What cleanup produces
I think we should push the launch to Monday, because legal haven't signed off yet.
Both products will do that. The question is whether you want it always, sometimes, or never — and whether the rewriting happens on your machine.
Who should buy which
- You dictate on a phone as well as a computer. Typeless. VV has no phone app and there is nothing to discuss.
- You work on a Mac and a Windows PC. Either. VV runs on both, and one licence covers both.
- Your procurement needs ISO 27001 or a HIPAA position. Typeless. We hold neither.
- Your requirement is that the audio does not leave the device. VV. That is architecture, and a retention policy is not a substitute for it.
- You work offline regularly. VV.
- You want your calls written up as well. VV Pro includes Vaitly Meetings (beta), with no meeting bot joining the call.
- You want the most polished automatic cleanup and do not mind cloud processing. Typeless is built around exactly that.

Questions
Does Typeless process speech on the device?
Their site says audio is processed securely in real time and never stored in the cloud, and that dictation data is not used for training. We would not characterise their architecture beyond quoting them. If on-device recognition is your requirement, ask them directly and run the aeroplane-mode test.
Is a retention policy as good as on-device processing?
For many buyers, yes. A reputable vendor with certifications and a zero-retention commitment is a reasonable risk position. It is a different kind of assurance, though: policy can change with a release, and architecture cannot without you noticing. Which you need depends on what you dictate and who you answer to.
Does VV have ISO 27001 or HIPAA compliance?
No. We hold no certifications and claim none. Our security page says so plainly. If a certification is a hard requirement, that is a legitimate reason to buy something else.
Can I try both?
Yes, both have free tiers. Give them different shortcuts. Dictate the same real paragraph into each and compare what you had to correct and how much you liked the cleanup.
